My goal(s) for 2018: To learn some new songs. I also want to learn Carter-style picking, and Travis picking. I’ve been playing for decades, and while strumming is good, I’ve never done anything resembling fingerpicking, so it’s way past time to get on that.
This could also be the year for some Donovan and Dylan songs (and maybe some others) in alternate tunings, such as Open D. There should be some harmonica practice in my future, too.

Those are all admirable goals! Fortunately, we’ve got a good number of easy, beginners fingerpicking lessons at Guitar Noise, which you can find here:

    Travis Picking Part One

    Travis Picking Part Two

“Wildwood Flower” is a great way to learn the Carter-style picking and it’s high time I tried to put together a tutorial on that. Hopefully 2018 will be kind to me in terms of time…

Good luck and keep up posted on your goals!

    Peace

    Hello Wendy

I just tried all four links and they do work. For which particular book are you seeking the audio files?
Write me directly at dhodgeguiat@aol.com and we’ll get this sorted out.

I am afraid these keep re-directing me to the DK Uk page and I cannot find the music samples online either. The ones I am looking for are the Idiots Guide to Guitar Exercises. There is no CD with the book, so I was trying to locate these online. Can you help me here, it is a new book I bought

    Thanks

    Hi David

Yes, they do direct you to the DK UK page, but near the bottom on the right hand side, you should see something marked “Book Extras” (you may have to hit the “read more” tag if you don’t see it). When you click on that, you should see a line called “Download the audio tracks for this title” and if you run your cursor over that, you should find that it’s also a link (it will underline when you do). Click on that and you should get the audio links. Sorry this is so convoluted.

Please let me know that you got them, okay? Either here or email me directly at dhodgeguitar@aol.com

    Peace

    April 18.

I found the “change” on the DK UK page, and selected USA, then pasted in the link https://www.dk.com/us/book/9781615646364-guitar-theory, but I can’t find either a “Book Extras” link or “read more” to locate the sound files (using Chrome).

    Hi David,
I have your Idiots playing bass guitar book, and I’ve ordered your Guitar Theory book.
I also have your Idiots Guide to Playing Guitar book. I’ve been following the directions you’ve given and am running into the same problems of not finding the audio files. You’d think DK would provide better support to their writers and customers.

If you find the correct url could you send it to me.
You’ve and the Ernie Ball Phase 1 and 2 books have been the essence of my learning guitar. Keep up the good work.
    Peace, Tony Conn.

    Hi Tony

Thank you for writing, and for your purchases!

I just got news from the Publisher that DK has had another “makeover” and all the URLs have been changed. Going to post up the new links as soon as I’m done with this reply.

As always, thank you for your patience in this matter.

    Peace

I’m reading your Idiot’s Guide Guitar Theory and am learning a lot. You are a great writer and teacher.

Like many others I am not able to access the audio files, and would like to get updated links for them. I would find them very useful.

    Hi Brian

Thank you for writing and thank you as well for purchasing “Playing Guitar.” I am in pretty much daily contact now with some folks of Alpha / DK about this and will be posting new links as soon as I get news as to where they are. I am also trying to update the blog with the “latest” status whenever possible (will be posting a new post right after I get done with this reply!). As always, I appreciate your patience and I hope that you know you can email me directly whenever you’d like.

    Hello Xenofon and Luna

My apologies for not replying sooner – things are fairly hectic here.

I’ve just sent my contact at DK another email and I hope that he’ll respond with something other than “we’re still working on it.” Rest assured that I will post something as soon as I hear. I’ll probably post it as a main article!

And I thank you (and everyone!) for your continued patience in this matter.

    Hi Gregg

Thank you for writing (and for buying the book). We did get the audio files link straightened out (as I mentioned in this post titled “Good News” on May 21). You can find it here:

    https://www.dk.com/us/information/guitar-theory

Let me know if this does not work for you. Hopefully it will!

Also, please feel free to email with any other questions you might have. And thank you for your patience in dealing with this.

Hi , I need the audio files for the complete idiots guide to music theory 2nd ed.
    Can you help?

  22. David
    February 18th, 2019 @ 3:13 pm

    Hi Rodney

You should be able to find the audio files here:

https://www.dk.com/us/information/guitar-theory/Down at the very bottom of the page, you should see a photo of the book. Beneath that, you’ll see this printed:

Download the audio tracks (111 MB ZIP) to accompany the lessons within the book.

Please let me know if you get these okay! The publisher changed around the entire site again and I trying to keep up with them. The good news is that all the download links for all the books are in one place!

Thank you once more for writing. Please don’t hesitate to email me again, either here or directly (dhodgeguitar@aol.com) with any questions you might have. I’ll try to be more of a presence here online as well.

Dave–Your published link to the proffered audio file, as referenced in your song-writing guide, leads me to a page which advertises the sale of your book, which I already have. How do you access the promised audio files? I am at a loss, literally, figuratively and monetarily. Any assistance is appreciated.

    February 27th, 2019 @ 7:40 pm

    Hi Tom

    Try this one:

    https://www.dk.com/us/information/art-of-songwriting/

At the bottom of the page you should see, just below a photo of the book cover, a line that says:

Download the audio tracks (14.9 MB ZIP) that go along with the lessons found in the book

“Audio tracks” should be in red and you can click on that to get the files onto your computer. Please let me know if this doesn’t work.

Looking forward to chatting with you again.

    Peace

    Hey David,

I’ve only just bought your Guitar Theory Idiot’s Guide and would love to get a copy of the audio files. Unfortunately they seem to have moved again. Any chance you know where they live now?

    Thanks,

    Have a great day!

    Hi Mei-Lyn,

Thank you for writing. I’m glad that you found the files. I truly need to trim down this site, especially since there are God knows how many articles about “where the audio files now reside” articles!

Please know that you can always email me directly (dhodgeguitar@aol.com) whenever you’ve a question.

    Stay well.

    Peace

I have tried (several times) to get the audio for “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Art of Songwriting” without success.
First I tried the DK site where they list their publications which have audio, i.e. “Idiots Guide Downloads”. When I click on your title, I am taking to a page showing your book, with the message “Download the audiotracks (14.9MB ZIP) …” However, after clicking the red “audiotracks”, no download occurs (the message bar at the bottom of my screen, shows that my computer is trying to download the ZIP file, with no result.
Secondly, I went to your site (where this is identified as a problem) to find the most recent link to the audio. This link leads to a blank page with a DK heading.
